I really hope I won't need to reinstall macOS by completely formatting the disk and starting new.ĭoes anybody know how I could fix or troubleshoot this? My (personal) instinct is that the setting/file necessary to fix this could be found deep in the /System/Library folder, but I'm not sure. I booted into macOS Recovery and reinstalled Big Sur (with the option that retains your files). I completely uninstalled SwitchResX (meaning using Find Any File to delete ANY trace) and restarted. Regardless, I'd like to know how I could fix this.
In the title of this thread, I decided to blame this on SwitchResX, but now I'm not sure if it was that or my own error of quitting kernel_task.
In fact, my original (and preferred) scaled 1440x900 option isn't even there anymore. The first two options aren't even HiDPI (evident by looking at the Safari app icon), and the "More Space" option isn't the option with the most space. So, it looked like my scaled resolutions were changed somehow. I made a (probably too complex) diagram to show what it looked like after logging back in:įor a bit of reference, here is what I REMEMBER it looking like pre-issue: I logged back in and went into System Preferences. But now, I was on the second option, a scaled res of 1280x800. I force quit kernel_task and it booted me back to the login screen.īut when I got to the login screen, everything looked a bit 'bigger.' Up until quitting kernel_task, I was on the 1440x900 scaled resolution, the third option. I'd normally wait and let everything cool down, but 1:00 AM me wasn't having it. This isn't the first time it's been like that either. kernel_task was at 100%+ which I have heard is caused by thermal management. I closed all apps (except Dolphin) and fired up Activity Monitor. I was playing some Wii games using the Dolphin emulator and I noticed that my bottom case was hot and my fan was running loudly, which was unusual for playing games in Dolphin. It worked fine for several weeks until last night. Okay, so I got SwitchResX on my new M1 MacBook Pro (as one would). I'd like to think of myself as a power-user, but this time I've really got myself stumped. I almost gave up at this point but kept going and entered another directory, I messed around with the Finder and Terminal to see if there was maybe a sneaky bypass to the display or something but found nothing, any help would be appreciated!ĭefault scaled resolution settings changed after using SwitchResX. So I looked again and found to go the directory where the file was located and pressed The combination (I forgot it) and put in the exact directory, so excited I pressed the beautiful blue button, no directory found. I ended up researching on the internet, I disabled SIP and rebooted, still a black screen, after that I wanted to give up but kept looking and found their website about how to troubleshoot this issue. I tried rebooting and changed a few settings, worked just fine! As I rebooted it went black again, I rebooted, still black. Then what happened was I rebooted to a happy MacOS until about half way through the boot up process and went to an entire black screen. I don't think its a cable issue because I am using a DP1.4 cable and able to get 5120x1440 120hz with HDR on the M1 mac with the same cable.I recently installed a software known as SwitchResX but I’ll call it SRX for short, To use it you need to disable System Integrity Protection (SIP) and I chose my custom resolution. If I do 5120x1440 60hz, with SwitchResX I am able to do HDR. However, it no longer gives me the option for HDR.
